A difficult question as
always... I'm a child of the 60's.
I left my alma mater, Stanford,
in 1977 for Texas. I've
been cruising the net since 1980. I'm a father of five: Ellen, Anne,
Sabie, John and David, in love with my wife, Mary, and
a real boy scout (although
I'm a
bit ashamed of the national leadership these days).
As an engineer I've designed chips at TI,
hacked Lisp, C--, and hypertext at MCC,
and since 1992 I've been bootstrapping the World Wide Web and for Schlumberger. My focus now is on Web
application services and Java. My paper: Four
lessons learned from managing World Wide Web digital libraries
describes some of the work that I have done. The past couple of
years I was in charge of the corporate and public search engines at Schlumberger
and their use in knowledge management.
Schlumberger closed down its Austin Center and sold most of its
software business in January 2004. I'm currently on my own,
working on products for intranet and extranet search.
