Thawte Web of Trust
- As a Thawte Web of Trust Notary I can help certify your identity
to the Thawte Web of Trust so that you can get email signing and
encryption certificates in your own name. To do this you must:
- Go to the Thawte
Web
of Trust Community site and read the descriptions and web of trust
rules there. Note: I found it
difficult to locate information on this site. Don't be
discouraged from this valuable free
service by that. Everything you need to know is there.
- Apply for a Thawte personal
email certificate account for free personal e-mail
certificates.
Once you have completed the steps to
open
an account you will be able to request a mail certificate that
identifies you as an anonymous "Thawte Freemail Member" at
your email address. Thawte will send the link to the certificate
via email in order to establish that you have access to the email
account for
which you requested the certificate.
- In
order to generate certificates in your own
name you must establish your identity with multiple Web of Trust
Notaries following the rest of this procedure.
- Make a note of your Web Of Trust account name and the national ID
number you gave when you established your account. I will need
this information in
order to certify your identity.
- Make copies of your
identifying documents including at least one photo ID and the ID with
the national identification number you used in establishing your
account. You will need copies for each notary who notarizes your
account. A trusted account which can issue certificates using
your own name will require notarization by two or more Thawte notaries.
- Contact me by email at rcpettengill@gmail.com
and arrange a time to meet.
- Bring your IDs, photocopies, and account information for your
account when you meet with me.
- You will need to meet with additional notaries until your account
has at least 50 trust points. At that point you will be able to
generate certificates that have your name as well as email
address. Austin notaries are listed on this
page at Thawte.
