When I hooked up to Road Runner with my Linux box, I found the information I needed scattered all over the net. My goal was to connect to Road Runner using RedHat Linux version 5.2 using the stock kernel with minimum changes to the standard RedHat configuration.

I used a Dell Pentium running Redhat 5.2 as a masquerading gateway for my household LAN. I use two separate ethernet interfaces: one for my LAN and one for the net connection to the cable modem. You need two ethernet cards so that you can firewall your internal LAN from the Internet. In my opinion this is essential if you have a LAN with local servers on it. For those with a historical interest the old FAQ is still available but no longer maintained. Some of the links there may be useful.

With Redhat 6.0 I found the situation greatly improved with Roadrunner almost supported directly out of the box. This release uses the pump package instead of dhcpcd to get your dynamic ip address from the Roadrunner DHCP server. Unfortunately, the version shipped with RedHat 6.0 doesn't quite work with Roadrunner. However if you upgrade to the latest pump RPM from RedHat (e.g. ftp://updates.redhat.com/ ) then you will be in good shape. I use pump-0.7.0-1.

RedHat 6.1 worked just fine out of the box.

The use of the RoadRunner logon server is now optional. It is only needed to do account administration. You can get the latest version of rrlogind from http://www.vortech.net/rrlinux/. Just follow the RedHat installation instructions found there.

There is now a Red Hat Linux 6.X as an Internet Gateway for a Home Network mini-HOWTO
